 House Blessings

House Blessing Prayer
Author Unknown

God bless the corners of this house,
And be the lintel blest;

And bless the hearth and bless the board
And bless each place of rest;

And bless each door that opens wide
To strangers and to kin;

And bless each crystal window pane
That lets the starlight in;

And bless the rooftree overhead
And every sturdy wall,

The peace of man, the peace of God,
The peace of love on all.

Did you know that house blessing is an ancient Christian tradition and one that also is common in Hinduism, Buddhism, and other beliefs?  A house blessing may go by other names such as house healing, house clearing, house cleansing, house warming, and space clearing. But regardless of your faith or the name you use for this ceremony, its purpose is to bring joy to the home and to protect the occupants from misfortune.

A house blessing can be either religious or non-religious, and it is a beautiful way to welcome a family moving into a new home or to renew a house blessing year after year.

Officiant Rev. Dee Richardson will work with homeowners, friends and family members to plan a beautiful, personal, and memorable house blessing ceremony. A typical house blessing might include:

  1. Gathering friends and family into the main living area of the home.
  2. Beginning the ceremony with a prayer, reading, song, or poem.
  3. Presenting an item for the blessing, such as oil to anoint the lintel or horizontal beam over a door or window; a smudge of sage to cleanse the energy; a sprinkle of sea salt (representing salt of the earth) to ward off evil spirits; or a symbol of peace and protection to mount near the front door.
  4. Ending the ceremony with a prayer, reading, song, or poem.
  5. Sharing a meal among friends and family, filling the home with laughter and good wishes for a happy, healthy life and good fortune in the coming years.
